This is an Update on the new Gourd Project...here I show some of the designs that I had drawn on with pencil then wood burned in...there will be 4 panels of the design as well as some other designs yet to be determined. I will follow with more pictures as I progress.

Note the top picture showing the top cut out, and the inside of the Gourd, later(bottom picture) showing the Gourd with the top back on.

New Gourd Project

Very Thick Canteen Gourd

View from Top

It has been quite some time now since I did another Gourd Art Project, I have been getting sidetracked by making flutes and other carving projects, so here I am back the the making of another Gourd Art Project.
I have chosen this very nice Canteen gourd for the new project, it is very thick, a full 1/2 inch thick I found after cutting it open to clean out.
I started to draw out some of the designs on the Gourd with pencil, and as you can see by the lines on it , I have chosen the layout of the top which I will cut out after wood burning the main design in the top and then carefully cutting out the top with an Exacto knife to remove as little of the material as possible so the top will fit back snugly when placed back on.
You may click on the photographs to enlarge for a better view.

I Will post more pictures as I go showing the progress of this new Project, pleas stay tuned, same blog, same station...girnning here....lol.

Use That Bottom

A Gourd Bottom

You may remember me saying in a past post that I try never to waste anything and as you can see I have made something out of a bottom of a gourd that I had cut out to make a drum.

This gourd bottom was so nice and Big(11 1/2" across) the bottom of a Bushel Gourd that I just could not throw away and had been saving it for quite some time waiting on the moment of inspiration to hit me and let me know what it should be.

The Bottom said "Make a Bowl out of me and put some nice geometric designs on me" so the planning started...first sketching out a design and then drawing the design carefully on the bottom with pencil, all the time taking careful measurements to make sure the pattern matched in all Four Directions, after carefully drawing on all the designs I next started to wood burn in all the lines and after that was done I used some Leather Dye to make the "In between Four Directions" a bit darker with a medium Brown Dye...carefully staying within all the design lines with the Leather Dye.

I set it on a plate stand to be on display.........Click on the photograph to enlarge so you can get a better view of the designs.
